This masterclass introduces the decision-making objective for corporations and the foundational principles that underpin it. We examine three core principles of corporate finance and explain how they motivate shareholder wealth maximisation as a practical decision rule. The session also considers how these principles evolve through the business life cycle and highlights the key assumptions underlying this objective. Finally, we explore conditions under which these assumptions may break down, particularly in the presence of agency conflicts and information asymmetries.
