Jeff Yu, Class of 2017

Alumni from Australia

Macroeconomic Analyst, Bank of China (Australia)

Having obtained a master’s degree previously, I was drawn to the MSF program at School of Finance, Renmin University of China in 2015 for its rich legacy and prestigious reputation in the disciplines of economics and finance in China and globally. After rigorous selection process including an interview, I became its first candidate from Australia admitted into the program.

The academic training of my student life at the program was rather intensive yet fulfilling. I dedicated my first academic year purely to coursework study and wide-ranging literature review under close guidance of my academic supervisors, which allowed me to gain a holistic understanding of theoretical frameworks and how they apply to economic and financial systems in practice in China through various case studies and precious insights given by prominent academics and industry experts.

By the second academic year, I have developed my own research interest in China-Australia economic ties, onto which I developed my thesis and completed an internship at a boutique Australian business advisory firm based in Beijing.

Upon graduation, I was offered a position by Bank of China (Australia) to be a Macroeconomic Analyst in its Sydney office, where I am responsible for analyzing macroeconomic and political developments as well as banking industry in Australia, undertaking research projects and delivering economic briefings to keep the senior management well-informed for better business strategy and decision-making.

In retrospect, I found the MSF program extremely rewarding, through which I was not only well equipped with the best academic knowledge and professional skills needed for career prospects for years to come, but also generously gifted with a resourceful alumni network expanding from academia to industry and policymaking that I would benefit for life.
